What 30 years of downturns taught us about marketing through a crisis

Y2K, the dot-com bust, the 2008 crash, the 2020 shutdowns and now the AI shift. The habits that kept our clients growing through every one.

Ad Spin Media was founded in 1996. Since then we've worked through Y2K, the dot-com bust, the Great Recession, the 2020 shutdowns and the arrival of AI search. Every one of those moments felt like the end of something. For the businesses that handled them well, each one turned out to be an opening.

Lesson 1: Measure everything before you need to cut

When budgets get cut, the businesses that survive are the ones that know which dollars bring in customers. If you can't tell which channel produced your last ten clients, you'll end up cutting the wrong thing. Put call tracking, conversion tracking and lead source tracking in place while times are good.

Lesson 2: Never depend on one channel

Every era has a channel that seems to do everything: the Yellow Pages, then Google, then Facebook. Then the rules change, costs jump or reach disappears. Businesses with a mix of search, social, email and mail have something to lean on when one channel falters.

Lesson 3: Own your customer relationships

Platforms come and go. Your customer list, email list and mailing list are yours. In every downturn we've seen, the businesses with a real list kept selling to existing customers while others scrambled for new ones.

Lesson 4: Keep advertising when others go quiet

When competitors pull back, attention gets cheaper and share of voice gets easier to win. Some of our clients' best years started in the middle of a recession, because they kept showing up while others disappeared. The key is spending on what's proven, not cutting to zero.

Lesson 5: Move early on the next shift

The businesses that built websites in the late 1990s, invested in search in the early 2000s and moved online fast in 2020 came out ahead. Today the shift is AI search. Customers are asking assistants who to hire, and the businesses that get recommended now will have a head start for years.

The bottom line

Resilience isn't luck. It's a set of habits: measure, diversify, own your list, stay visible and move early. We've built those habits into our own business for thirty years, and we build them into our clients' marketing from day one.
